Bella
My sweet Bella,
Years from now, when you think back to this time in your life, I want you to remember the pandemic we lived through. The good and the badâand no matter what you hear, no matter what youâre taught about it, and no matter what happens between now and when youâre old enough to read this, there was plenty of both during this strange and scary time.
We were so lucky. I mean it. So, so lucky. But a lot of other people werenât. Hundreds of thousands of people died agonizing deaths, many of them alone, many of them terrified. People drowned in their own mucus while half of the country tried to pretend the pandemic wasnât even real. Whole cities were shut down, and people fought over toilet paper. Small businesses closed, never to reopen again. Some big businesses too. This put such a strain on our economy and our standing in the world. Whatâs really sad about it is that the very richest people got even richer while the rest of the world got so much poorer. We saw everything that is broken in capitalism under the brightest, most revealing light, and as usual the people who had the least suffered the most. I want you to remember that millions of people, including people we love, had to work in unsafe environments, risking their health as essential workers just to keep food on the table.
But there you and Milo were. As you took your afternoon naps less and less frequently, I would lean my head on your doorjamb, watching your chest rise and fall in gentle breaths, and wonder if there was any way I was doing this parenting thing right at all. Iâve always been a worrier, even in the best of times. Raising children during a pandemic wasnât something I had prepared for, or had ever really considered. Iâd traveled the world and seen such suffering in so many families, but never had I imagined the problems that hurt so many people around the world would exist here in the United States as well. I hope that as youâre reading this, it is a distant memory tucked away somewhere between that time Milo had to get his eye glued shut because of the golf ball incident and the time you stepped on a bee and your little toe swelled up.
Itâs important to know everything Iâm telling you. Itâs important to internalize it, to make better choices than your momâs generation did when we had the chance to decide. But the things I want you to remember are different. They are the things that I hope you can look back on in the dark of your own personal fears and know that you have connections deeper and more powerful than anything the world can throw at you. I want you to remember the countless nights you slept in my bed as the world outside ground to a halt. We stayed up late watching movies or your weird slime videos (just ew).
